苯从焦炉气和煤焦油分馏、裂解石油等制取，也可人工合成如乙炔合成苯。苯广泛地应用在化工生产中，它是制造染料、香料、合成纤维、合成洗涤剂、聚苯乙烯塑料、丁苯橡胶、炸药、农药杀虫剂(如六六六)等的基本原料。它也是制造油基漆、硝基漆等的原料。它作为溶剂，在医药工业中用作提取生药，橡胶加工中用作粘合剂 的溶剂，印刷、油墨、照像制版等行籽也常用苯作溶剂。所有机动车辆汽油中，都含有大量的苯，一般在5%左右，而特制机动车辆燃料中，含苯量高达30%。在汽油加油站和槽车装卸站的空气中，苯平均浓度为0.9～7.2mg/m3(加油站)和0.9～19.1mg/m3(装汽油时)。苯主要通过化工生产的废水和废气进入水环境和大气环境。在焦化厂废水中苯的浓度为100～160mg/L范
围内。由于苯微溶于水，在自然界也能通过蒸发和降水循环，最后挥发至大气中被光解，这是主要的迁移过程。另外的转移转化过程包括生物降解和化学降解，但这种过程的速率比挥发过程的速率低。
苯是一种应用极为广泛的化工原料。化工厂超标排放的废水、废气是造成环境中苯污染事故的主要根源。贮运过程中的意外事故，如翻车、容跑龙套破裂，泄漏等，也会造成严重污染。苯还是机动车燃料的万分，汽车加油站和槽车装卸站是苯的另一个污染源。苯能与乙醇、乙醚、丙酮、氯仿、甲苯等许多有机溶剂互溶，在血液中的溶解度很大，在水中的溶解度很小，20℃时，仅为0.05%。进入人体的苯可迅速通过呼吸和尿液排出。苯能积蓄于鱼的肌肉与肝脏中，但一量脱离苯污染的水体，鱼体内的苯排出也比较快。苯微溶于水，水中的苯可迅速挥发至大气，最后被光解。苯为易燃、易爆有机物，一量发生泄漏，遇明火极易发生爆炸起火。苯燃烧时，冒出浓烈的黑烟，伴有刺激性气味。因苯蒸气比空气重，火焰会沿地面燃烧。水中排入大量苯时，由于苯难溶于水，水面会出现漂浮液体，并有刺激性气味，还会出现鱼类及其它水生生物死亡。苯有毒，人员进入事故现场接触苯后，眼部粘膜受到刺激，会发红流泪，皮肤受到刺激会发红发痒。摄入、吸入或皮肤吸收大量苯后，会出现头痛，恶心，腹痛，麻醉症状，甚至死亡。
危险特性：易燃，其蒸气与空气可形成爆炸性混合物。遇明火、高热极易燃烧爆炸。与氧化剂能发生强烈反应。易产生和聚集静电，有燃烧爆炸危险。其蒸气比空气重，能在较低处扩散到相当远的地方，遇明火会引着回燃
